Jai ho !
Have you ever noticed the fashion statement our ( Indian ) politicians make. If you notice each of our own politicians - men or women - have their own ways of dressing. Be in the ex Tamil Nadu chief minister Jayalalitha - who created her signature style by the bullet proof jacket that she wears or be it, the much in news, very flamboyant Shashi Tharoor - whose style is a very unique mix of flamboyance and the politically correct Khadi.
When the whole of the 'Indian men population' seem to have moved on to a simple pant and a shirt - what I find really funny is that these politicians retain the very Indian dhoti or lungi . I mean , honestly, do these politicians not wear a simple pant-shirt at all - as in, have their sartorial sense not got at least that westernized ? What are they trying to prove by wearing the lungis and the dhotis to the parliament and sometimes even when representing India to the outside world - I would understand if the women politicians wear a saree when they travel abroad - after all the saree is a much worn attire in India - and is worn by the rich / poor or old / young alike - which means to say, that it does represent the dressing of the Indian women - but can you say the same of the dhoti or a lungi . I would find it hillarious if the average working men in India start wearing a lungi to their office :)
Besides have you noticed that all the men in politics - whether they are from the younger or the older generation - "must" wear a white kurta :)
Check out the few really "cool" dresses of our very own netas
Chidambaram

Laloo prasad Yadav.
Shashi Taroor

Jayalalitha

If I did not know them as politicians, I would have seriously mistaken them for models showing off their very own 'Indian', 'regional' identity .
After all , all the dresses worn on ramp are not meant to be worn in your day to day life :)

I completely agree. The kurta-dhoti formula is ridiculous. They will converse in English all the time but won't wear western attire??
