The beauty of classics
Old classical songs have a beauty of their own. Most of us in the today's generation find it difficult to appreciate the beauty of these songs because we do not understand either the lyrics or the music.
Thanks to some good music directors, some of these songs have been modernized and used in the hindi movies. Some of these songs have gained huge popularity even among today's youth. I am sharing with you three such songs below :
1. Bole Re Papihara
Raaga : Miya ki Malhar
History : This song is a composition of a musician named Sadarang. Niyamat Khan (aka Sadarang): 1670-1748 was a court musician of Mohammad Shah "Rangile" (1719-1748).
This song was popularized in the hindi movie Guddi released in the year - 1971.
2. Albela Sajan aayo re -
Raaga : Ahir Bhairav
History : This song was composed by Manrang in the early 18th century. Bhupat khan "Manrang" was the son of Niyamat khan "Sadarang".
The song was popularized in the hindi movie 'Hum Dil de chuke sanam' released in 1999.
3. Laagi Lagan Pati Sakhi sang
Raaga : Hamsadhwani
History : South Indians are familiar with Raga Hamsadhwani, the call of the swan, through a song written by Muthuswamy Dikshitar, who died in 1835. Dikshitar composed a bhajan in it, which is one of Carnatic music’s standard songs. The lyric is Vatapi Ganapatim bhajeham (I bow to Ganesh from Vatapi/Badami) .
The raga was brought to Hindustani music by Aman Ali Khan, a singer of Mumbai’s Bhendi Bazaar gharana, who died in 1953. His lyric is “Laagi lagan pati, sakhi sang ( I feel joy with my lord and my friends) ”.
This song was popularized by the bengali film 'Meghe dhaka tara' released in the year 1960.

Loved the 'H...' raga song. Beautiful. Hadn't heard it before. "Bole re Papihara" is an old favorite of mine. Love Vani Jayram's voice. Not a big fan of Albela Sajan but that might have more to do with Salmaan Khan and the movie rather than the song itself :)
